Business/Personal Thought: Growth and Adaptability

When someone rejects you, disrespects you, puts you down, and or tells you to leave they want nothing to do with you do not take it personally because (barring ethics) what they are saying is they have no desire to change and grow into the person they need to become to maintain a relationship with you.

The business lesson: Business relationships fail by refusing to listen, mature, change and grow with their client - think Packard Bell, NCR, Etzel, Enron, etc

Commitment and Maturity

Driving back these thoughts kept creeping to my mind – what do they mean? Bottom line it is the reason why some people achieve great things and others fail. So often people play at relationships regardless of whether they are business or person. They seek playmates instead of partners and wonder why things do not work.

If life is short should we not?
  • Treat children like children
  • Treat adult like adult
  • Let your yes be your yes
  • Let your no be your no
  • Say what you mean
  • Mean what you say
  • Let your actions match your words
  • Let your words match your actions
  • Respect others
  • Behave in such a way others are required to treat us with respect
  • Make constructive use of our time
  • Not allow others to waste our time and respect the time of others

Let’s look deeper
  • A playmate is someone who entertains you and does what is in their interest at the time because it is fun to them your thoughts and feelings are of little consequence
  • A partner is someone who believes in and compliments you and does what is in your best interest at the time both short and long term because they care about respect and want what is best for you

Which type of people do you surround yourself with?

  • Playmate - A companion in play or recreation (excitement or entertainment)
  • Partner - One that is united or associated with another or others in an activity or a sphere of common interest, especially a business partnership or a spouse

In business people often wrongly believe business people do what they do to take on risk and excitement – while this may be true for some it is largly a misunderstanding – a business person has a vision – a mental image that they are willing to work to make a reality.

How do we fail?

We do not believe people when they tell us who they are – examples:
Business:
  • Someone tells you they do not respect you and you keep allowing them to use or take advantage of you
  • Someone steals from you and you allow them back in your business to continue to liberate items at your expense
  • Someone lies to your face to allow them to do so

Personal that can be applied to business
  • Someone tells you they plan to use you and you convince yourself they did not mean it
  • Someone tells you that they will be unfaithful and you dismiss it as a joke
  • Someone tells you they are in love with someone else and you continue to stay with them
  • Someone only comes around when they want something from you
  • Someone curses you out and you allow them to do so repeatedly

So what is commitment?
  • Being true to yourself
  • Knowing that you have value and making sure you are treated with the respect and courtesy you deserve
  • Making statements and sticking to them
  • Respecting your time enough not to waste others nor allow them to waste yours

Quotes on Commitment and Responsibility:
  • I know the price of success: dedication, hard work, and an unremitting devotion to the things you want to see happen - Frank Lloyd Wright
  • I can't imagine a person becoming a success who doesn't give this game of life everything he's got - Walter Cronkite
  • We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort - Jesse Owens
  • We are not here merely to make a living. We are here to enrich the world - Woodrow Wilson
  • Whatever happens, take responsibility - Anthony Robbins
  • Whoever renders service to many puts himself in line for greatness - great wealth, great return, great satisfaction, great reputation, and great joy - Jim Rohn
  • Within each of us lies the power of our consent to health and sickness, to riches and poverty, to freedom and to slavery. It is we who control these, and not another - Richard Bach
  • You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today - Abraham Lincoln
  • Take your life in your own hands, and what happens? A terrible thing: no one to blame - Erica Jong

So here are the real questions:
  1. Can I trust you with my life and livelihood?
  2. Can I believe you when you tell me someone?
  3. Are you willing to sacrifice to achieve your goals?

If you answered no to any of these questions – I would reconsider entering any serious relationship especially if it involves starting business.

Also ask yourself these questions:
  1. What do you want?
  2. Who do you place first?
  3. Who are you (Are you a child seeking a playmate or an adult seeking a partner)?

How many adults do you know who act like this

So what to achieve - here is something to consider

What is the bottom line?
If you are wanting to stay the same - not grow and change then respectfully you are not even committed to yourself so how can you be committed to another person or a business?

Why - because insanity is doing the same things over and over again expecting different results. If you want different results you must do different things!

For far too many a painful negative or unproductive known is better than an unknown even if that unknown is better - why - people confuse comfort with health, growth and change with pain, and allow fear not faith to dictate their lives.

The power of Accountability, Achievement and Association

We have all heard the saving the truth shall set you free.

This has been an interesting week. Was in a conversation with a friend who told me they are doing work which they believe is beneath them. I shared that there is no such thing as honest work that is beneath you and shared that almost 15 years ago I worked a part time and even cleaned toilets to pay bills as a degreed engineer and that my mother who was a certified and licensed teacher used to clean building with my grandmother to earn extra money to make up the difference. So often we place value on the wrong things and I believe we should be humble enough to appreciate the fact we have our health and the ability to do any work. While I hate this recession I think if we as a society relearn that simple truth we would have made much progress because the obsession with easy money or finding new ways to exploit instead of serve (greed) is much of the reason for our current dilemma. We have lost sight of some important core characteristics:
  • Fidelity
  • Respect (of self and others)
  • Integrity
  • Self control
  • Diligence
  • Accountability
  • Patience
  • Empathy
  • Courage
  • Scholarship
  • Self Sacrifice
Today I was getting gas and spent about an hour talking to a young man who was telling me how his girlfriend committed suicide yesterday and how he had to cut her down.

He told me about the note they found of how life was no longer fun. He also told me about how for $200 and some change the Doctor cut her off from her medicine. This made this think about how important the quality of the people we associate with are and how they can literally mean the difference between life and death.

What are the characteristics of the people you associate with and do they challenge you to reach your potential or do they enable your continued dysfunction. Do you associate with people who work to create mutually beneficial relationships or people who look to exploit you for their own gain at your expense.

He recanted how she was tired in her notes and how life was no longer fun, there was no joy in life. She had what many consider the american dream her own house, a good job, and could do what she wanted and yet that was not enough so what was missing?

Also, to a lessor degree can some of what we see here be attributed to why some people succeed and others continue of paths of self destructive behaviors?

On Emotional Maturity & Emotional Intelligence some topics mentioned for discussion are:
  • Are you mature?
  • Your relationships reflect your maturity
  • Are you Emotionally Mature?
  • Emotional Maturity & Relationships
  • Youth Fades ... Immaturity Lingers
  • Emotional Control & Expression
the part I like the best because it ties back to business is

Maturity & Leadership

Leadership is more than a desire to delegate tasks. If your confidence provides orientation for unconfident followers, and if your decisions are beneficial, you will be respected. Soulwork coaching can help you accomplish family, team or organizational goals. Soulwork can help you:

  1. maintain a clear vision that encourages people to align with you
  2. create an environment where people want to be responsible
  3. clearly describe what is necessary for quality performance
  4. transfer responsibility to the people who do the work
  5. develop individual capability and competence
  6. set an example and challenge people to continually learn

Pardon the rambling but here are the questions:
  • how have your relationships past and present affected the current quality of your life and are they moving your closer to or further away from your goals?
  • Are you better off long term from having known this person?
  • Are they better off long term from having known you?
  • Have the quality of their life or business improved from having associated with you and visa versa?
  • When setting your goals since you cannot achieve them alone have you answered the WIFM question with regards to how it will affect others?
I will leave you with these thoughts:
What do you think?

Bias and Prejudice and other limiting and self limiting behaviors

We all have bias and prejudiced and fact is never is this truly a positive trait. In larger society often rules were changed to subjugate whole ethics groups or arbitrarily assign characteristics to people (often negative) to justify a false sense of superiority. In the case of CEOs and C level executitives it manifested itself via a sense of entitlement thinking that despite the poor performance of the respectictive company they were someonhow due large compenation. With respect to individuals and especially business owners it causes them to pursue courses of action that are familiar even if they are not productive or positive.

Bias, prejudice and so many other things are a tool people use to avoid change and thus negate growth. How often have you in the case of ethic bias witness rules being changed to exclude with no regard or effort made to determine if the individual or group of individuals can or should be excluded and were never given a chance to see what they could achieve. A classic example of this to me was Jim Crow where politicians used fear as a basis of decisions and yet when we look at the factis historicially is it not ironic that during that same period of time many of the colleges and univerisities we now enjoy were founded with the help and in some cases the leadership of the very people subjugated.

Bias allows us to discard and discount fact and make choices to justify decision we have already made instead of allowing the facts to dictate the choices. They allow us to be exclusive instead of inclusive, to be destructive instead of constructive. In relationships they allow us to discount and destroy what is good for us and best long term because it is not what we think we want short term.

Some more tangible examples:
  • The child who is stopped from putting their hand on a hot stove
  • The adult who decides to work because they need money now instead or are not capable of completing college
  • The advisor who decides African Americans are not capable mentally be being scientists or engineers
  • The person who discounts someone because they are not a member of their particular ethnic group
  • The person who prefers play or work or who wants the reward but is unwilling to pay the associated cost
  • The person declining to even attempt to learn a little of another language
  • The person who believes themselves better than others thus closing the option to learn from people whose ideas may offer more merit or in fact be more sound
  • The person who believes because you do not look like me you cannot possibly understand

Lets apply this to business and how entrepreneurs use some of these tactics to self sabotage.

Growth - so you want to own a buisness?

Often through the years people have spoken to me about wanting to own a business. They speak of the money they will earn and so often think that is all there is to it when in fact that is not even a small percentage. Fact is your business in many ways is an outward manifestation of who you are as a person, your values, ethics and personal belief systems. How you respond to a challenge is telling and your motivation is also important.

  • Why do you want to be in business?
  • What product or service do you have to offer?
  • Would someone be willing to compensate you for your time, knowledge, product or service?
  • What makes you unique?
  • Are you willing to grow into the person you need to become?
  • Do you believe you are here to service your clients or be serviced by them?

What do you bring to the table?

So often people focus on what can be done for them. Some people even believe businesses and corporations exist to employ them. What people miss is businesses exist not to make money but to bring value to all involved albeit their stock holders, owners, employees and customers/clients. Additionally as entrepreneurs and business owners we must focus on what value we bring - this is true of employees also.

What are your thoughts?

He is the former Carolinas MBEIC Chair (he proceeded me)and the immediate past NationalMSDC MBEIC Chair. the question - Why is business development important in ethnic Minority Community and with First Generation Business Owners?

Importance of Core Values

Core values are who we are as people and businesses. When we loose focus or allow others to distract and derail us (including society) we get ourselves in trouble and we lake the discipline to achieve our goals more or less determine them and be default we allow others - including society - to dictate our lives and outcomes. Lack or loss of these values is also what in som ecases cause business to loss sight of the fact that their purpose is to serve their customers and clients and respect their employees and focus instead on how much money they are making or how they can exploit instead of serve.

Self Sabotage - what is it and how to address

So often we are the authors of our own shortcomings setting ourselves up for failure and stealing defeat from the jaws of victory. Here is a simple concept - until you deal with the hate you have of yourself you will typically always do yourself harm - further if you hold prejudice, bias or hate for another that is also most likely a projected form of self hatred which will lead to sabotage because we were never allow ourselves to have any more than we think we are worthy of and deserve and if we hate ourselves we will look for reasons and continue behaviors over and over again that lead to our demise.

Leadership

Take what you feel is useful and remember A bad leader manages, a good leader walks by example, a great leader inspires and sometimes is extraordinary in their ability to not stand out!

Here is a hard question - are you a leader or are you in fact so behind that you think you are ahead?

Business Integrity

Some people confuse integrity with hinesty they are not the same. Yes, there is some overlap yet they are actually two differrent concepts.

Integrity has to do with structures and processes. An incomplete or improperly structured foundation in a buiilding lacks the structural integirty to support whe weight of the building which will be placed on it at a later time. As such this applies to life and business. Allow me to explain - a business without the proper contolls and balances will soon collapse just as will the life of a person.

Would you built a skycrapper without first designing it and making sure the access for plumbing is in place as well as the concrete is properly reinforced with rebar? Then why would you attempt to run a business without ensuring these same sort of process controls are in place?

So what is business integrity?

If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don't have integrity, nothing else matters. -- Alan K. Simpson

If I were to ask you what attribute is the most influential in regard to the success of a business, would you know immediately which one is the most important? Based on my many years as a business owner and entrepreneur, I have discovered that at the very top of the list is the distinguishing quality of integrity. Without integrity at the helm of a company, a business is usually short-lived. In fact, when business integrity is present throughout the deepest layers of a company and not just at its surface, it becomes the heart and soul of the company's culture and can mean the difference between a company that succeeds and a company that falters.

The Internet's Immeasurable Impact on the Marketplace!

The importance of integrity has always existed among the business community, but in recent times has been shown as falling short. It is the Internet's immeasurable impact on the global marketplace that is now making the expression of integrity, reliability and credibility extremely important. Furthermore, the consequence of global competition means that customers will simply not consider a company that shows any less than the highest level of integrity. Since there is a wealth of competitive companies easily available and accessible via the Internet, there is in fact no need to accept anything less than the best.

Where Does Integrity Start?

In an effort to build upon a foundation of integrity, the first requirement would be to establish excellent rapport with clients. Based on many years of study, the best and most practiced method for achieving rapport is by way of Relationship Marketing. Just as it sounds, Relationship Marketing is founded on the single and most critical characteristic, known as "Integrity." However, achieving true integrity with clients often leaves many an entrepreneur bewildered, grasping for techniques and strategies that guarantee their futures. But integrity is not something that can be grasped and then simply used. Integrity in its essence must be so ingrained within the nature of an individual, its company and the team members, that it remains steadfast no matter what. Without question, others sense it and find it very attractive.

The True Nature of Integrity!

Now you are probably asking yourself, what is the true nature of integrity? There are in fact some very basic principles that surround the qualities of business integrity. At its core, integrity begins with a company leader who understands the qualities of integrity which then filters down throughout the company into every department and every member's approach and attitude.

In recent research performed by the Institute of Business Ethics- an organization which is among the world's leaders in promoting corporate ethical best practices, it was found that companies displaying a "clear commitment to ethical conduct" almost invariably outperform companies that do not display ethical conduct. The Director of the Institute of Business Ethics, Philippa Foster Black, stated: "Not only is ethical behavior in the business world the right and principled thing to do, but it has been proven that ethical behavior pays off in financial returns." These findings deserve to be considered as an important tool for companies striving for long-term prospects and growth.

The following 7 Principles of Business Integrity are the basics of integrity and a good starting off place to consider. By integrating each of these principles within a company environment, the result will be nothing short of a major rebirth of the enterprise.

Principle #1 Recognize that customers/clients want to do business with a company they can trust; when trust is at the core of a company, it is easy to recognize. Trust defined is assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of a business.

Principle #2 For continuous improvement of a company, the leader of an organization must be willing to open up to ideas for betterment. Ask for opinions and feedback from both customers and team members and your company will continue to grow.

Principle #3 Regardless of the circumstances, do everything in your power to gain the trust of past customer's and clients, particularly if something has gone awry. Do what you can to reclaim any lost business by honoring all commitments and obligations.

Principle #4 Re-evaluate all print materials including small business advertising, brochures and other business documents making sure they are clear, precise and professional; most important make sure they do not misrepresent or misinterpret.

Principle #5 Remain involved in community-related issues and activities thereby demonstrating that your business is a responsible community contributor. In other words, stay involved.

Principle #6 Take a hands-on approach in regard to accounting and record keeping, not only as a means of gaining a better feel for the progress of your company, but as a resource for any "questionable " activities; gaining control of accounting and record keeping allows you to end any dubious activities promptly.

Principle #7 Treat others with the utmost of respect. Regardless of differences, positions, titles, ages, or other types of distinctions, always treat others with professional respect and courtesy.

While it is most certainly an integral and positive step for a small business to recognize the significance of integrity as a tool for achieving its desired outcomes, that is only the beginning. What must truly be recognized for true success is that while certain precise universal principles lead to business integrity, it is in the overall mindset of the company and the unfailing implementation of these key elements that an enterprise is truly defined. A small business that instills a deep-seated theme of integrity within its strategies and policies will not only be evident among customers, associates and partners, but its overall influence cannot help but to result in a profitable, successful company. By recognizing the value of integrity, and following each of the aforementioned 7 principles for achieving integrity, your success cannot be far off.

Tuck Executive Education program endorsement

Let me open with an expression of thanks to the faculty and staff of Minority Programs at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth for an excellent program, the October 2008 session of Building the High-Performing Minority Business. The courteous treatment the participants received, the nurturing environment of the campus, and the willingness of my fellow participants to share was a refreshing change from the day-to-day. Running an effective and profitable business in this economy is important and ensuring owners have the proper tools to lead and grow their businesses has always been important, but especially now.

I found that Building the High-Performing Minority Business excelled in providing development strategy—the curriculum was challenging and the practicum was effective.  The most beneficial offering, for me, was one-on-one mentoring with Len and Jason.  As a result of their suggestions, I am positioning my company to take advantage of some potentially upcoming trends, and changing the appeal—and consequently the marketing—of my business.

I made revisions to several details of my business, some of which are:  the nature of my blog; the content of my website and linkedin profile; and the general focus of my company.  It will take me months to fully implement all of the changes and solutions that came out of the Building program, but I am already seeing some payoff.  Once these changes are complete, I will most likely pursue a moderate capital infusion, as well as strategic teaming agreements, to allow more breadth and scale.

Since returning to the Carolinas and applying what I learned in the program, the virtual perception of my company has already improved.  Some clients whose value I had determined to be questionable evolved and solidified, and I was also able to secure business from some clients that I had not heard from in a few years. Additionally, I have begun laying the groundwork for strategic alliances with classmates; once my company’s internal realignment is complete, I will likely be able to capitalize on some of the synergy that came out of the program for several of us.  I have already referred some clients to classmates, and I have likewise received some great leads from classmates.

As a result of what I have learned I have reorganized to pay off debt, removed dead weight and have new projects in the pipeline.

I personally and actively advocate that all business leaders, business owners and associates should attend this program to help them with their businesses, as well as equip them with the tools they need to help others. Thank you so much for the opportunity to attend—it was, and remains, of great benefit.  I strongly recommend this program to any business owner. Having the proper tools to run your business is important in any economic environment.

A Hundred Twitters- A Thousand (Chris Brogan)

True intellegence is knowing when to talk, when to listen and when to share.

Today Chris' post hits on many salient ponts including the application of demographics contained information as it relates to business and it potential real time applications for business and so many other things when one truly understands the implications Twitter has. So instead of sharing my thoughts on business allow me to share Chris Brogan's

The Secrets of #Business Success

For years I have read many books on how to run and build a successful business. Some books say write a business plan, others talk about elaborate systems of control, even others speak of marketing.  All of these are good but they do not speak to the core issues.

There is a saying the more things change the more they stay the same. Fact is what is takes to run and grow a business has not ever changed. Before discussing how to create a successful business let me explain simple why businesses fail.  I will start with a simple truth – a business runs at an imbalance – that is it spends less money than it generates in revenue. An unsuccessful business spends more than it makes in revenue (to grow) or spends exactly what it makes. It really is that simple and that is why a business fails.

Some will tell you either grow or die and that to some extent is true however it is not the growth that is important rather it is the type of growth – is it natural and sustainable and balanced based on true business needs (like the cycle of nature) or is it forced, cabalistic an hostile in nature like (like a predator in an ecosystem with a limited source of food). The first can be maintained it is controlled the latter if left unchecked (i.e. driven by greed) will lead to the demise of an already fragile ecosystem and the eventual death of the business and all associated with it.

The underlying principles that determine the sustainability and success of your business have not changed since the beginning of time.

Without these three (3) basic ingredients a business will fail

  • Respect – seeing and understanding the value, contribution and importance of all things (people, facilities, equipment, contractors, suppliers, employees, clients, customers, etc) involved in the enterprise and maintaining or working to enhance or at a minimum maintain them.
  • Honesty – understanding your core values and strengths and providing a full disclosure to all involved so that they can made an educated determination as to your value and ability as well as remove any doubt regarding your being able to execute the terms of the agreement and knowing that if you cannot you will tell them
  • Trust – the obvious result of doing the first two.

When these characteristics are in place people can them rely on you to and trust you with their wellbeing because fact is in business you are hired to solve a problem and you do not do business with people you do not trust long term.

Sure a book will give you all of this great theory
